Monkey See Monkey Do is a one-act opera by award winning Texas born composer Roberto X. Rodriguez.
It is based on the classic folk tale of the Hat Seller and the Monkeys. The opera is derived from
the Mexican version of the old folktale and the libretto, written in English, incorporates sections
of the Spanish language.
There will be a brief pre-performance orchestra introductory skit & talk and a special welcome from
Alturas Duo (a well-known duo featuring Andean and Chilean tunes.) There will also be
a Q &A session after the opera. The show will run for 1 hour and 15 minutes. Surtitles will be used.

(speaker) from the Italian Cultural Institute in Wash. DC
Dr. Michele Giacolone, Public Relations Officer, Italian Cultural Institute, brings with him the image
of Italy as a center of cultural diffusion from classical time to the present. Dr. Giacolone brings
also a life time of interest in opera---not surprising of an Italian whose country gave opera to the
world. He has also worked in the past with stage directors like Bolognini, Zeffirelli, Pizzi.

ONLY children whose families came from El Salvador are going to be in this Chorus.
They have NEVER been asked to sing BECAUSE their families came from El Salvador.
They will sing favorite folksongs known by their grandparents. Cheer this special happening.
As they begin to learn more about their “home country” and its music, they will share with our
community the cultural arts that their families brought in their hearts to this country.

Come celebrate with the Guild when Arlingtonian Jose Sacin, Peru’s greatest baritone, sings familiar
arias. Together with the Alturas Duo, Jose Sacin will also perform popular Zarzuela arias, and songs
of Manuel de Falla, beloved Chilean and Latin American folk songs. Hearing the Alturas Duo will be
like sitting in the finest concert halls in Peru, Chile or Bolivia. Their string instruments are
rarely heard in North America.
Meet the Children’s Salvadorian Chorus the same evening. They will perform songs from their families’
home country under the direction of Guild Member, Prudencia Chism. Formed in response to a request to
Walter Tejada from Adas Israel Congregation for a planned tribute to honor the heroic actions of Col.
Jose Arturos Castellanos, a diplomat from El Salvador during WWII. Michael Barrios and Tony Hawkins
will accompany the new chorus. This short perform-ance was previously performed on May 1,2011.

A Variety of Beautiful Opera Arias
Jose Sacin is a nationally-known baritone and is the Artistic Director of the OGNV’s performances.
He has worked with the Washington National Opera, Opera de Lima, Baltimore Opera, Opera Camerata
of Washington, Caramoor Opera Festival, and recently at Opera International at Strathmore Hall.
Maria Pollicina began her career at the Australian Opera, and had a great success as Desdemona
in Verdi’s Otello. She sings in operas and concerts in both Europe and in the United States, and
recently won acclaim as Abigaille in Verdi’s Nabucco.

Lesley Lee Francis, American poet Robert Frost’s granddaughter, will discuss her book,
Robert Frost: An Adventure in Poetry, 1900-1918. Francis traces the family's adventures from
their farm years in New Hampshire through their nearly three years in England. This enchanting
evocation of the Frost family's life together makes more poignant the unforeseen personal tragedies
that would befall its members in later years.
Natalie Wexler, The Mother Daughter Show. The Mother Daughter Show is a DC-based
satire about mother daughter relationships and private school culture that's been praised as

Billie Jean Keith, A Kiss for a Yankee Dime. Keith writes about life in rural Mississippi

Bizet’s dazzling opera is the spellbinding tale of friendship, jealousy, loyalty, love and religious
duty. Premiering as one of his first works more than a decade before “Carmen,” this captivating opera
is evidence of his great musical gifts and serves as a prelude to the brilliant work that followed.
Originally set in a fishing village in ancient Ceylon, two pearl fishermen, Zurga and Nadir, whose
friendship was tested years earlier over their romantic obsession with the same beautiful stranger,
declare their brotherly bond in one of Bizet’s best-loved duets, “Au fond du temple saint.” But their
long lost love, Leila, soon returns as a mysterious priestess, and when her true identity is revealed

Area (MSPNCA) of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Clubs, Incorporated (NANBPWC)
and the Opera Guild of Northern Virginia (OGNV) will sponsor “The 2012 Vocal Arts Competition for Emerging Artists”
in Honor of Dr. Mattiwilda Dobbs, an African-American soprano and one of the first Black singers to enjoy a major
international classical career in opera. This event will be held from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Walker Chapel
United Methodist Church, 4102 North Glebe Road, Arlington, Virginia 22207.
Donations and a free will offering will be accepted at this event.
For almost 77 years, the NANBPWC has advanced the interests of business and professional women of color. Vocal arts
is one of the cultural areas that our Association promotes in an effort to provide experience and exposure to young
adults striving to pursue a classical vocal arts career. In 1982, the Association introduced its signature program
formerly known as the “Leontyne Price Vocal Arts Competition.” In 2001, the Association changed the competition
name, with the endorsement and consent of Leontyne Price, to the “Vocal Arts Competition for Emerging Artists.” This
competition seeks to provide a competitive arena where young talented and gifted vocal classical performing Black
artists can demonstrate their artistic abilities. The contestants must be between the ages of 18-25 and prepared to
perform one selection in each of the following categories: ARIAS – Opera, Cantata, Mass Requiem, Oratorio; ART SONGS
– German Lied, French Art Songs; and either a Negro Spiritual or Work by a Contemporary African American Composer.
The objectives of this event are threefold: (1) To assist these artists in fulfilling their career goals, objectives,
and aspirations in classical vocal arts performance; (2) To continue the legacy of cultural enrichment established
by NANBPWC; and (3) To promote the OGNV’s mission of raising and fostering the awareness of the classical arts in the
Washington Metropolitan area, particularly in Northern Virginia.

The Honorable Loren A. Smith
The Honorable Loren A. Smith, a senior Judge of the U.S. Court of Claims, was appointed to the Court
on July 11, 1985. He was designated Chief Judge on January 14, 1986 and served in that capacity until
July 11, 2000 at which time he took senior status. .Judge Smith is a graduate of Northwestern
University where he received his B.A. in 1966; he attended Northwestern University School of Law,
receiving his J.D. degree in 1969.
Judge Smith formerly served as Chairman of the Administrative Conference of the U.S. from 1981-1985.
During his tenure as Chair, Judge Smith was a member of the President’s Cabinet Council on Legal Policy
and on Management and Administration. Judge Smith served as Chief Counsel and in Reagan for President
Campaigns in 1976 and 1980.
Loren Smith, who lives in Arlington, VA, was born in Chicago, Illinois. He is married to the former
Catherine (Kitty) Yore and they have two sons, Loren Jr. and Adam. He is a member of the Bars of the
Supreme Court of Illinois; U.S. Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces; United States Court of Appeals,
D.C. Circuit; United States Supreme Court; United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit; United
States Court of Federal Claims.
Judge Smith may have started his avocation as an actor in 1972 while still living in Illinois when he
served as host of a nightly radio talk show called What’s Best for America? Long involved and interested
in theater, Judge Smith performed with critical acclaim as the Major Domo in Don Pasquale for the Opera
Theatre of Northern Virginia. It is also to be noted that Judge Smith is an amateur magician. Without a
doubt Judge Smith is committed to giving to his community through public service which is clearly
demonstrated by his work for WETA. For years he has served on the WETA Public Television & Radio Community
Advisory Council and serves on the station’s Board of Trustees. The council is made up of individuals who
serve as voices of the community for WETA regarding programming, outreach services, and public activities.

Jose Sacin
Known for his expressive voice of “liquid gold” and the “stage presence of a lion” Peruvian native Jose Sacín
is considered one of the leading South American baritones of our time. He has lived in Arlington, Virginia for
many years. Jose has performed and collaborated with the leading figures of the opera and music world today
including; a nationally televised performance for Pope Benedict XVI alongside Placido Domingo at Nationals
Stadium in Washington, DC. Jose has also performed in a multitude of operas all over the world including the
roles of Silvio in I Pagliacci; the title roles of Rigoletto and Don Giovanni; Alfio in Cavalleria Rusticana;
Valentin in Faust; Danilo in the Merry Widow; Belcore in L'Elisir d'Amore; the Father in Hansel and Gretel; the
Count in Le Nozze di Figaro; Sharpless in Madama Butterfly, Angelotti in Tosca and Nerone in L'Incoronazione
di Poppea.
He has worked with the Washington National Opera, Opera de Lima, Baltimore Opera, Opera Camerata of Washington,
Caramoor Opera Festival, Opera North, Bechstein Concert Series, Choral Arts Society of Washington, Wagner
Society of Washington DC, Maryland Opera Society, among others. Sacin has also made extensive appearances in
Spanish Zarzuela, a form of Spanish operetta, and has started his own company, Zarzuela di Si, in the
Arlington-DC community. He has appeared as a recitalist in Russia, Japan, Costa Rica, Honduras, Venezuela,
Bolivia, Israel, Peru and extensively throughout the United States. Upcoming engagement are the roles of Alfio
and Tonio in Opera Delaware ‘s Cavalleria/Pagliacci. Earlier this year Sacin took part in the very prestigious
International Vocal Arts Institute in Blacksburg, VA and Tel Aviv.
Gina Perregrino
Italian-American mezzo-soprano Gina Perregrino made her debut as Dritte Knabe in Mozart's Die Zauberflöte with
the New York Lyric Opera Company. She later sang the role of Mercedes in the company's productions of Carmen.
Last season, Gina performed twice this year with the New York Philharmonic in Avery Fisher Hall. In October,
Gina performed the lead role of Dolores in Teatro Lirico of DC's production La Dolorosa, a Spanish zarzuela
produced by José Sacin. She has studied with leading baritone Sherrill Milnes (Metropolitan Opera), American
soprano Diana Soviero (La Scala) and acclaimed vocal coach Joan Dornemann (La Scala, Metropolitan Opera, Opera
Paris) at the International Vocal Arts Institute in Blacksburg, Virginia.
A soloist in Tuscany and Switzerland. Gina studied at the University of Siena in Italy, where she performed as
a soloist with the Sessione Senese orchestra in Switzerland and in open-air concerts throughout Tuscany. She
made her debut this fall as Maddalena in Verdi's Rigoletto. A recipient of the Liberace Scholarship at the
Manhattan School of Music, she is currently studying with the world renowned mezzo-soprano, Mignon Dunn. Gina
Perregrino is the recipient of the Manhattan School of Music Liberace Scholarship and the Marga and Arthur King
Scholarship.
Michael Crabill
Michael Crabill was recently part of the GMU Opera troop which walked away with its first national-level award.
The singers won for a performance of the first act finale of Too Many Sopranos, a comic opera about a group of
sopranos who are vying to get into heaven. Their head opera coach was GMU Professor Michael Crabill, on piano,
who also served as stage director. Crabill is a GMU faculty member of accompaniment and diction in the Music
Department. He served as musical director and Head Opera Coach for the performance and helped prepare the
students musically and vocally for the prize-winning competition.

André Previn’s modern masterpiece blends the sultry and fiery drama of Tennessee Williams’ Pulitzer
Prize-winning play with a brilliant score, creating a musical experience that will enchant both opera
devotees and those less familiar with opera. Meet Blanche DuBois, a fading and fragile Southern belle
who attempts to leave her shadowy past behind when she moves into her sister’s home in the steamy
underbelly of urban New Orleans. But violent clashes and sexual tension with her brutish and bitter
brother-in-law, Stanley Kowalski, lead to the story’s shocking climax, which drives Blanche even
further into her own delusions and away from reality. Previn’s expressive and riveting score enhance
the raw emotion and heartbreaking tragedy of this gripping work. Sung in English with English
supertitles.

Mozart’s delightful opera buffa finds those beloved characters from “The Barber of Seville” in
madcap mayhem once again in this hysterical story about a single day of lunacy. The clever Figaro,
now major-domo for the lecherous Count Almaviva, is about to marry his beautiful Susanna, Countess
Rosina’s maid. But to do so, he must outwit his employer and his old nemesis, Doctor Bartolo, and
avoid the advances of the Countess’s former governess. Will Figaro and Susanna become man and wife?
Will common sense triumph over power? This uproarious work is among the most cherished comic gems
in the operatic canon and has enchanted audiences for centuries. Sung in Italian with English
supertitles.

Monkey See Monkey Do is a one-act opera by award winning Texas born composer Roberto X. Rodriguez.
It is based on the classic folk tale of the Hat Seller and the Monkeys. The opera is derived from
the Mexican version of the old folktale and the libretto, written in English, incorporates sections
of the Spanish language.
There will be a brief pre-performance orchestra introductory skit & talk and a special welcome from
Alturas Duo (a well-known duo featuring Andean and Chilean tunes.) There will also be
a Q &A session after the opera. The show will run for 1 hour and 15 minutes. Surtitles will be used.
