About Us
The performances offer children an opportunity to hear opera in English, and learn techniques from special effects to the intricacies of set design. An explanation of the interplay of costumes, the role of the conductor and director are all detailed and for many children it is both a first and lasting exposure to the fusion of music and drama that is opera.
In addition to introducing children to opera, OTNV provides a vehicle for singers and musicians to learn their trade. Young aspiring singers do not start at the Washington Kennedy Center or the Metropolitan Opera, but they do need a stage on which to develop their skills and techniques. Many of the singers who have performed with ONTV have moved onto other companies, including companies which have performed at the Kennedy Center.
The Opera Guild of Northern Virginia continues to expand its membership and support OTNV. The Guild has been busy in the last few years with many activities, including sponsoring opera talks, special talks for students with an opera cast, galas, fund raising events, educating young people, and preparing for OTNV's annual children's opera. With our many wonderful Members and Sponsors, we hope to continue providing this unique experience to the youth of Northern Virginia.
